Ellis Marsalis Inducted into the Jazz Hall of Fame
-
Yesterday’s post was about hearing jazz legend Bucky Pizzarelli, whom I saw a couple nights ago with his sons playing amazing music. Last night I saw Ellis Marsalis at the Apple store of all places, on the day he was inducted into the Jazz Hall of Fame.
There is such a grace and ease surrounding performers who are masters at their craft. With Ellis Marsalis, the piano bows to his gentle commands. Sadly, this instant gratification attitude in our present society doesn’t allow for the seasoning necessary to be a truly great artist. But I digress.
Marsalis’ Jason manned the drums – and he’s solid, amazing. It’s rare to hear drums played so tunefully – you can hear the melody and harmonies if you listen closely. After a bit Branford Marsalis and his sax arrived and joined the family on stage, then trombone playing son Delfeayo joined the music making. Last, and certainly most famous, Wynton arrived with trumpet in hand. (no singer?) The music was hot and the family warmth, just as hot.
Isn’t there a saying, ‘the family that plays together, stays together.’? Kudos to both the Pizzarelli and Marsalis families for making music a major part of their children’s lives. Many of us don’t get the exposure to music that is essential for young minds, nor do we get the encouragement that, if we had it from our families, our lives would be so much richer and our art a part of the global harmony.
Parents who have artistic kids – please, support their art and encourage them to learn more and more about their passion. Art chooses you, you do not choose art. So give them all you can – listen and learn yourself about their passion. Everyone will be richer for the experience.
