Sing High Sing Low – Observe Your Breathing

  • Singing high and singing low is natural. You do it all the time, right? Not so much, you say? Ok, the first thing you need to understand is why do you want to sing higher than you do now?

    Do you want to sing your favorite song, but it’s a strain? Do you want to WOW the audience with your high notes? Do you think you’ll be thought of as a great singer if you can hit high notes?

    No matter the reason, it seems to be the # 1 reason people seek my help as a vocal trainer. One of my goals as a voice teacher is to give my students the technique they need to sing in any range naturally. ‘Naturally’, meaning using all the right muscles and openings of the body, your instrument, that will help the breath and sound flow freely to create a great sound.

    So the first step you want to think about and gain a great understanding of, is the tension you are holding in your body. Secondly, you want to be aware of the tension you create when you are making sound – singing or speaking.

    Every Sing Like You Speak™ voice lesson begins with a Meditative Breathing exercise. This is a guided meditation for the student to switch their focus from the chaos of the outside world to inside the body, which is your vocal instrument. An intimate understanding of how your body works as an instrument is the first step to learning how it will work free of the knots you (and everyone else) create when you begin to sing.

    Now’s the time for you to begin getting to know this instrument called your voice. Begin by observing how you inhale and exhale. Without making a sound, continue observing your inhale and exhale now adding the thought of singing. Notice what happens. 99% of you will change the breathing. Repeat this exercise until you can think of singing without adding tension to your body, your instrument.
