Singers Painless Practice

  • Time. Our most precious commodity. As a singer – a musician – practice is what we do. (Hopefully) Practice is the time when we make vocal technique a part of our brains and bodies. And you all know the more solid your technique the more fun and freedom you have with your singing. Practice is time well spent.

Some singers can’t stop practicing and love every minute of it. Other singers don’t like to practice but do it because they know they need to. How’s about you?

Let’s consider a few ways to make practice painless.

Breathing. You can practice breathing driving, walking or listening to music. Simple inhale that open the airways then blow the breath out along the same path. Try breathing along with the singer when you listen to music. Zone in on the moment you switch from inhale to exhale. Keep that moment free of tension or tightening of the muscles. That is Painless Practice.

Vocal Freedom. You can practice creating a free vocal sound when you are talking. It’s the same instrument you use to sing and training the speaking voice is training the singing voice. When you are talking be aware of how you are using your voice. Open the space behind your nose to allow for free release of the voice. That is Painless Practice.

Learning Music. Listen. Listen without focusing too hard on, ‘Oh man, I don’t think I can hit that note!’ Just listen and enjoy – get into the groove of the music. Dance along, let the music move you. Let the song enter your body and mind and take over for a moment. You will learn all layers of the song and then be able to sing musically – like a pro. That is Painless Practice.

Make these little bits of painless practice a part of your life. You will see positive changes in short time.
