Be A Singing Star – What Does it Take?

  • I have a student who will be meeting with Def Jam Records for the second time this week. Very exciting to be chosen by someone in the music biz who thinks you might have what it takes to be a singing star.

Let’s look at the journey this student of mine has take to get where she is – the choices she had to make and her determination.

I’ll call her Amy for now. (when she gets signed by Def Jam Records, we’ll let the whole world know!) Amy is in her mid-20′s, she’s petite and very cute. She’s also passionate about her music and being able to sing without having a producer ‘fix’ her sound and pitch in the studio. She is determined to be a solid singer who can perform live – and sing live and know that it will sound great.

Amy has been studying voice for about 10 yrs, working very hard to get the best out of her voice. She and I have been working together only about 2 months, but she feels that my teaching is the best she’s ever had, so she comes 2 or 3 times a week to study. That’s a big financial commitment not to mention the time involved. This woman is determined.

Amy also gets out into the music community here in NYC and meets people in the industry. She then keeps in touch with these people and sends them little up dates about her career. They may not respond, but she knows that at least one person, the man at Def Jam Records, was paying attention. She continued when there was no encouragement from industry people to do so. She is determined.

When Amy isn’t working or networking, she’s practicing. She’s practicing her technique and then using that technique to practice songs. She believes in herself and her ability to make it in this most difficult of professions. Even though Amy is young, she has been preparing to meet with Def Jam for at least 10 yrs. That is what it takes to become a singing star.

The singers you see on American Idol did not decide a week before the audition to start preparing and training, they began training years before. Years! You must have the drive and the passion for music that Amy has to be a singing star. That’s what it takes.
