Roberta Flack and Leona Lewis
-
The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face is a sensual, soulful song that I first heard years ago sung by Roberta Flack. I’m working on the song right now myself to do in a show so I went onto facebook to listen to different renditions. There I sound, besides Robert Flack, Leona Lewis’ version of the song.

There is a big difference between the two women’s singing style – how they use their voices and the result. I’m looking at this as a woman who grew up with acoustic music. Singers were really singing. It was their bare voices that we heard on recordings and in concert. I also do a comparison as a voice teacher who wants students to be able to sing live, to be totally involved in communicating the music to the audience – without any help from a producer or electronic wizardry.
Listen to Roberta Flack and how her voice fills the room. Then listen to Leona Lewis and try to imagine her voice without electronic altering. Also imagine Leona Lewis’ voice trained to fill the room and then adding a little edgy studio tweak and that would be really something. Enjoy!
