Tender Young Voices

  • When we are young, when we are very young, our voices are strong, loud even, powerful and communicate clearly. What happens as we grow older?

    1. We’re told to be quite, that our talking is annoying and that our singing grates on people’s nerves.
    2. We begin to hold our voices and not speak in a normal tone.
    3. We stop singing with abandon and start singing cautiously.
    4. When we hit the teenage years, we get cool and our posture slumps.
    5. Slumped posture makes us work harder to produce sound and then we’re straining the voice.
    6. Pressures and muscular tension increase with age and responsibility.

I have a new client who had 2 vocal surgeries by the time she was 17 yrs old. Following surgery she was given no vocal lessons at all. Now at the age of 52 her speaking voice is barely audible, she gets hoarse on a regular basis and she doesn’t go out to dinner or talk on her cell phone while walking because her voice can’t project enough resonance to be understood.

In this case, my client’s vocal problems are now limiting her lifestyle! Fortunately we have begun working to re-train her voice so she can return to a normal lifestyle. What are we doing?

    1. Returning her concept of vocalization to its’ natural, childlike concept of freedom.
    2. Re-aligning her body alignment. That’s her instrument and it needs to be straight to help with sound production.
    3. Giving her exercises to relieve the muscles that have been working so hard to produce sound, and strengthening the proper muscles so using her voice becomes effortless.
    4. Educating her about her own instrument and what it is capable of doing.
    5. Finding the best path for breath and sound to flow along.
    6. Laughing a lot. A good belly laugh can teach someone how joyful it is to produce sound.

I will keep you posted on my client’s progress. After just 2 sessions I can hear the difference and she feels the difference. Yeah! I have the best job imaginable.
