Musical Play for Kids out of School
-
Summertime! Your kids have waited all year for summer to come. Now that it has arrived and the 4th of July has just passed, it’s time to get down to… to… to what? Do your kids need something to do this summer? Here are a few ideas to keep their minds and occupied with creative play.

1. Every sound has pitch. When someone knocks on the door, it creates a pitch. Have your children knock on different surfaces in the house, then sing the pitch to match the knock. If you have a keyboard, have them find the pitch on the keyboard. Even if it’s the wrong pitch, they are still exploring and beginning to listen more attentively.
2. Singing is always great creative play. Making up songs is the best! You can get your kids started on creating a song by giving them a subject, a rhythm, or a rhyming pattern. You might even want to get involved.
3. Rhythms are all around us. If you listen closely you can clap them out with your hands or on a drum. The clothes dryer tumbles the clothes around in a certain rhythm. Car or truck tires on the street. People tend to take in rhythm. You could have your kids tap out the rhythm of each other’s speech.
The world around us is full of music and musical games waiting to be played. Check back on this blog for more musical education games.
Do you have a child who is just dying to sing? Have I got a website for you! www.SingLikeYouSpeak.com has online video voice lessons where you can work at your own pace and learn to sing as simply and naturally as you speak.
