Vocal Damage Healed
-
Vocal damage can ruin a singer’s career. Vocal cord nodules are benign (noncancerous) growths on both vocal cords that are caused by vocal abuse. If you get nodes they prevent the vocal folds from approximating, or vibrating together in a normal way to create sound.
Unfortunately, when a singer learns that they have damage is often the point when they seek my help as a vocal trainer. Once the damage is done, it’s very difficult to heal it. An otolaryngologist, a physician who specializes in aliments of the vocal apparatus, will recommend surgery. For some, surgery works. For others it ends their career – the most famous case is Julie Andrews.
Vocal damage can be healed with the proper vocal training. The damage comes from using the voice in a way that puts great stress on the muscles surrounding the vocal tract. The simply a poor use of the voice. When the voice is re-trained to function naturally, using the proper muscles to help create sound, then the vocal chords are allowed to heal.
This is a drastic over-simplification of the process, of course, but it is possible with Sing Like You Speak™. Here’s a video of a student of mine whose vocal damage we were able to heal.
