No More Freaking Out About How to Sing High Notes

  • High notes are ‘high’ because they vibrate higher in the head. Thus it is sometimes called ‘head voice’ which is simply a label for where higher tones resonate. But high notes create a lot of fear in singers because they believe that high notes are hard to sing.

As a voice teacher I’ve seen this played out over and over again. Here comes the high note and I can see the fear come across a student’s face. The brain is freaking out, the instrument – your body – stiffens and gets ready for a fight. It is this reaction to the coming high note the actually prevents you from reaching it.

Shift your thinking a bit. It’s just another note with the chance to express an intense emotion. Take a look at this video.
