On June 11 and 12, 2011 the New York Singing Teachers Association presents a course in Comparative Pedagogy through their Professional Development Program. I, Sally Morgan, am honored to have been asked to be one of 6 presenters.

Over the course of two days, six master teachers present teaching demonstrations after case histories of students have been discussed. Concrete links are made between various teaching strategies and the scientific and medical information covered in other courses of the PDP program. Janet Pranschke, moderator. To make concrete links between various teaching strategies and the scientific and medical information covered in earlier courses it is suggested (but not required) that the 4 other core curriculum course be taken first. Many NYSTA members attend this class every year, taking away useful new studio strategies and greater awareness of their own teaching style.

I will be presenting, Sing Like You Speak™ from 1 – 2:45 pm at Columbia University Teachers College on 120 St in Manhattan. It promises to be a lively and informative couple of days for voice teachers and students alike. Here is the complete roster of presenters.

The Screen Actors Guild has honored me by inviting me to teach for the SAG Conservatory program. I will be teaching Quantum Leap Monologue Prep, a course that connects the actor to the voice of the character.

An actor’s voice is essential to craft. The missing piece for many actors is honest connection to the character’s voice. This workshop gives you techniques that help you live honestly and consistently in your character through body alignment, breath and voice.

First a bit about the Screen Actors Guild. It is an actors union that protects the financial and working conditions of actors in film and television. Here in New York City SAG also has a program for a few extra dollars a year, that provides on-going training for actors. This is the program I’ve been asked to teach.

In May I lead a Monologue workshop for a similar program at SAG. It amazes me every time the stunning results when I work with actors. They somehow forget the voice component of their craft. The voice is what connects the actor to the audience! When you learn to speak with the whole body and mind, then the magic happens.

It’s hard to explain the transformation that occurs in an actor when you discover your own power as an artist. Actually, the title of the course, ‘Quantum Leap’ comes from a thank you note written to me by a student after we worked on her monologue. She felt she had taken a quantum leap forward with her acting simply by connecting to the words with her whole instrument.

SAG members are welcome to join us on July 29, 2011 from 10 am ’til noon for Quantum Leap Monologue Prep. To sign up call (212) 827-1448.

Broadway singers have another new challenge with all the new rock music-based musicals. Plus every new rock musical that comes out seems to be from a different era of rock – meaning that each era has its’ own style and approach to the music. How does a singer figure out the differences in rock styles? The answer used to be, ‘Uh… listen to a lot of music from each era and try to figure out the differences in vocal style. Maybe?

Now, we Broadway/Rock singers have a definitive guide that teaches you exactly how to approach each rock musical style. Thank you Sheri Sanders for writing the book, Rock the Audition! slated for publishing in the spring of 2011 by Hal Leonard.

Sheri Sanders, a pioneer in the Rock Musical world, will lead the class through an exploration of rock and pop music from the 1950′s through the present, addressing aspects of style, vocal dynamics and music arranging. She will demonstrate how to integrate these concepts and confront the challenges actors and Musical Theatre performers of learning how to successfully “act a rock song”.

The insights and techniques Sheri will share at this event may mean the difference an actor between not getting the role and winning the audition! You can also meet Sheri Sanders in person and do a FREE Master Class with her and the NY Singing Teachers Association:
Sunday, February 13, 2011 3:00-5:00 PM
Teachers’ College, Columbia University
120th Street, between Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue
Room 179 Grace Dodge Hall

I recently interviewed Sheri for my program, Singers Key Notes. Here is a small clip from that interview. SKN Sheri Sanders Teaser

Come join the NY Singing Teachers Association and Sheri Sanders on Sunday, February 13, 2011 3:00-5:00 PM for a rockin’ afternoon. I will be there learning all I can from this vibrant rock musical singer and author. Rock Out!!!

Quantum Leap Monologue Prep helps actors leap into that elusive creative force which ignites your acting, taking it to a higher level.

An actor’s voice is essential to craft. The missing piece for many actors is honest connection to the character’s voice. This workshop gives you techniques the help you live honestly and consistently in your character through alignment, breath and voice.

Quantum Leap Monologue Prep:

•	Voicing the character
•	Projection, power and purpose
•	Consonants as the action of your words

Techniques covered in Quantum Leap Monologue Prep:

•	Every exercise has a developmental purpose
•	Breathe with ease diaphragmatically
•	Improve vocal quality
•	Increase vocal choices
•	Intimately connect with audience

Actors are asked to bring a monologue, a bottle of water, an open mind and a willing spirit.
The workshop is balanced between group exercises and individual hands-on training. Everyone from beginner to professional will take home specific, proven techniques to raise their speech to the next level.
